The Department of Art in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University is pleased to announce Kinetic: Conversations in Contemporary Art, the third annual installment of this exciting lecture series at the Katzen Arts Center on October 29 at 6pm.

Generously sponsored by Dr. Darryl Atwell, Kinetic: Conversations in Contemporary Art brings nationally recognized artists together with local artists, arts professionals, art students and the greater Washington, DC, cultural community to engage in critical dialogue about contemporary art and creative professional practices. Taking place in a high caliber academic setting, the annual lecture fosters the meaningful exchange of ideas through a fluid public lecture format and intensive student driven interactions. It is the intent of Kinetic to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of contemporary art in DC.

Demetrius Oliver will be in conversation with John Caperton, the Jenson Bryan Curator at The Print Center in Philadelphia, about his most recent project, Canicular, and his artistic trajectory. Oliver's artistic practice includes sculpture, photography, video, and site-specific installations that explore his diverse intellectual and material interests, ranging from cosmology, American Transcendentalism, and technology.

Recent exhibition venues include the Print Center (PA), Franklin Artworks (MN), D'Amelio Terras(NY), the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the Studio Museum in Harlem (NY), and the Renaissance Society (IL). He has participated in residencies at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the CORE Program/Museum of Fine Art, Project Row Houses, and Steep Rock Residency and is the recipient of a PEW grant and a Rema Hort Mann Foundation.
