The amount that BCBS will pay for a given covered service is determined by the Plan Allowance for that service. The Plan Allowance for covered services is determined by the contracted rate or fee schedule that participating providers have agreed to accept for that service or rate or fee that is established by law.

Prescription Drug Benefits

CareFirst BCBS medical plan participants have prescription drug coverage through Express Scripts and Kaiser medical plan participants have prescription drug coverage through Kaiser.

Dental

The university offers full-time faculty and staff a choice between two dental plans through Delta Dental:

  • Comprehensive dental – covering all types of dental services
  • Basic dental – covering preventive services and other limited services

In addition, discount dental benefits are available through the CareFirst and Kaiser medical plans.

Eligibility

  • Full-time faculty or staff members are eligible as of the first of the month following the date of hire

  • Changes can be made during open enrollment or when a qualifying event occurs
  • Dependents include:
    • Spouse, opposite or same-sex domestic partner
    • Children to age 26 or any age if disability requirement is met
