The Inclusive Learning Series

Individuals interacting around a table

The Inclusive Learning Series is a cornerstone of the Dialogue Across Differences initiative and was launched in Fall 2025 to support the American University community. This series is designed to address trending topics that are especially relevant to AU students, faculty, and staff, with a special emphasis on issues that intersect with higher education, social dynamics, and the broader political landscape. By harnessing faculty research, practical application, and student perspectives, the series offers robust learning opportunities that foster engagement and understanding across the campus. Additionally, the Inclusive Learning Series is structured to support inclusive teaching pedagogy, advance leadership development, and actively engage with the emerging and evolving needs of today’s scholars, ensuring that the AU community remains responsive and adaptive to a changing academic environment.

Through interactive conversations and collaborative sessions, the Inclusive Learning Series draws faculty and staff into meaningful dialogue around contemporary realities that impact American University students. These discussions are informed by current faculty scholarship and practical experiences, creating a space where participants can share insights and strategies to address challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Student voices are central to this process, ensuring that the series remains responsive to the evolving needs of the AU community.

The purpose of the Inclusive Learning Series is to proactively address issues that may emerge within the classroom and throughout the campus environment. These include topics at the intersection of AU student experiences, shifts in the higher education landscape, and critical social-political issues affecting America and the wider world. By facilitating ongoing learning and dialogue, the series helps equip the AU community with the tools and understanding needed to navigate complex challenges and promote an inclusive, supportive campus culture.

This series is designed to address the institutional work needed to embody Inclusive Excellence with knowledge of the multiple ways in which students are impacted by contemporary inequities.

The learning series is open to all members of AU.
