Biographical Note

Anna Louise Kasten Nelson was born in 1933 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Nelson began her academic career as a student at Fort Smith Junior College. She then studied at the University of Oklahoma at Fort Smith, where she earned her BA in history and MA in political science.

Nelson began her college teaching career at George Washington University as a history lecturer in 1970 and earned her PhD in history there in 1972.

In the mid-1970s Anna Nelson served as a member of the National Study Commission on Records and Documents of Federal Officials. Generally known as the Public Documents Commission, it was established after President Richard Nixon resigned and announced plans to control his presidential records. Nelson helped write the commission's report that led to the passage of the Presidential Records Act, which clarified that the records of the president are the property of the American public.

She left George Washington University in 1986 to become an adjunct professor in history at American University, where she became the Distinguished Historian-in-Residence in 1996.

In addition to Nelson's membership to the State Department's Advisory Committee on Historical Diplomatic Documentation (1992 to 1994), she was a member of the American Historical Association's Research Division (1986-1989). In 1994, she was nominated by President William Clinton to represent the American Historical Association on the John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Review Board.

Nelson published more than 30 scholarly articles on 19th and 20th century United States foreign and national security policy. She received the James Madison Award from the Coalition on Government Information, and the AHA awarded her its Troyer Steele Anderson Prize for the advancement of its association.

Anna Nelson passed away in 2012.

Scope and Content Note

The majority of this collection (1945-2012) contains declassified National Security Council documents, Nelson's publications, and research material. The research and articles series includes information for her unfinished book, Presidents, Policy, and Process: 5 Case Studies of National Security Decisions (1950-2012). The five case studies are about the following topics:

Harry S. Truman and the process of National Security Report 68 [NSC 68] (1950 - 1989)
The White House administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953 - 2004)
John F. Kennedy Foreign Policy (Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis, April 1962 - October 1962)
Lyndon B. Johnson and Dominican Republic military intervention (1964 - 1991)
Richard Nixon and his attempts to restore power to the National Security Council as well as his appointment of Kissinger negating these attempts (1965-1973)

The declassified National Security Council documents are from the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations, as well as interviews, clippings, and information pertaining to the Assassination Records Review Board (1962 - 1963, 1975, 1992 - 2008). There are photos of Nelson (1986 - 2010) at panels and events throughout her career as well as lesson plans and syllabi (2004 - 2011) from the classes she taught at American University.

Anna Nelson's sons donated this collection to American University in 2013.

Processing Note

The collection contains five series: 1. Research Notes, 2. Articles and Speeches, 3. The National Security Council, 4. Subject Files, 5. Teaching, and 6. Biographical.

All of Nelson's publications are located in the articles and speeches series. Her research guides, such as finding aids, research notes, and requests are in the research notes series. The declassified documents are arranged by series. National Security Council documents are in the National Security Council series, and the Assassination Record Review Board documents are in the subject series. The original papers were in order by topic and remain so. Every series is in alphabetical order by subject. For all acronyms, the order will be under the full name (Example: National Security Council instead of NSC).

There is an Audiovisual (AV) portion in this collection. All of the AV is stored in a single box (25), but the material has been organized alphabetically in series order. The material is listed in the box and folder list with a marker to indicate its location. There is AV content in series 2 (articles and speeches), 4 (subject files), and 5 (teaching). There is a born-digital component to this collection. The files are sorted by series and subject. The majority of the digital files are in series 1, 2, 5, and 6.

According to American University's policy on the confidentiality of student records, all graded items were removed from the collection.
