Administrative History
The Alpha Chapter of the Phi Delta Gamma's National Fraternity for Graduate Women was established at American University in 1923. Its first meeting was held on October 18, 1923. Phi Delta Gamma holds monthly and annual meetings as well as biennial national conventions. The first national convention was held on April 27, 1927. The sorority's mission is to foster a fraternal spirit among women pursuing graduate and professional courses in colleges and universities. The organization which is comprised of Chapters, each with an Executive Committee, consists of the following officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Registrar, Historian, Editor, and Chairman of the Program Committee. Each Chapter was comprised of the following standing committees: Membership, Finance, Program and Social.
Scope and Content Note
The Phi Delta Gamma Archive consists of convention proceedings and minutes (1927-2011) and Executive Committee minutes (1992-2011) including the organization's policies and procedures, bylaws, handbooks, letters, membership directories, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, publications, 1964 history, and coat of arms.
Provenance
Phi Delta Gamma's Archive was donated to American University in 2011 by Linda E. Hammer Acting National President of Phi Delta Gamma.
