A September 19 screening of Encanto after dark brought together AU’s wider community to enjoy the magic of the 2021 Disney movie set in the mountains of Colombia.

“Not only could families enjoy the movie, but everywhere you looked, kids were playing, students were conversing, and people were having a good time,” said neighbor David Jacobs. “In an online world, it was a refreshing reminder of ‘real life,’ so to speak. The weather was great, and the snacks were plentiful—both important factors in ensuring little ones are happy.”

Jacobs came to the movie night with three generations of his family, including his wife, Alice; their two kids, ages one and three; and their children’s grandfather, Matt. Beyond the fun, he appreciated that the visibility of the gathering helped neighbors and AU faculty, staff, and students understand each other better.

“It’s important for AU to welcome surrounding neighbors to campus this way because it serves as a reminder that we all exist in this physical space together,” Jacobs said.

The evening was sponsored by the Office of Community and Government Relations, which regularly brings neighbors to campus for programming that deepens relationships with residents who live in the university’s backyard.

The screening was the fourth in AU’s new Eagles at Night Friday film series. Organized by the Division of Student Affairs, along with campus partners, the series is designed to bring the AU community together for fun activities at the end of each week.

“Watching Encanto under the stars alongside families from our neighboring communities showed how our campus can be a welcoming space where lasting memories are made beyond the classroom,” said Isabella Hassett, assistant director of community and government relations.
