American University helps students apply lessons from the classroom to real-world experiences, preparing Eagles for impactful, purpose-driven careers.

That commitment to experiential learning propelled AU up four spots to No. 15 on US News and World Report’s 2026 list of best colleges for coops or internships, released today.

“Internships help students see our curriculum brought to life,” said Liz Romig, interim assistant vice provost for the AU Career Center and AU Abroad. “In DC, they have direct access to wide-ranging organizations—from Capitol Hill to over 13,000 nonprofits—where they can apply what they’re learning, build networks, and explore future career paths, all within reach of campus.”

Eighty-seven percent of the Class of 2024 (the latest year data is available) landed at least one internship during their time on campus, and more than 90 percent participated in experiential learning opportunities like research, community-based learning, and study abroad. AU also ranked No. 5 for study abroad, with 60 percent of students studying outside the US—the most in school history—during the 2023–24 academic year.

Aditya Kataria, SPA/BA ’27, CAS/BS ’27, interned last summer at Food and Water Watch, a nonprofit that advocates for sustainable food, clean water, and a livable climate for all.

“My internship taught me about organizing around an issue, as well as the role of nonprofit organizations in affecting positive change,” said Kataria, who noted that working with others to solve problems is valuable experience preparing him for a career in law.

US News and World Report ranked American No. 88 overall, up three spots from last year. The publication also recognized AU—a top 50 private university—in several specialty rankings, including undergraduate research/creative projects (No. 44) and first-year experience (No. 52).

Bolstered by its cutting-edge AI curriculum, the Kogod School of Business also ranked No. 7 for undergraduate international business programs and No. 77 among undergraduate business schools.
