You are here: American University Veterans President's Welcome

Letter of Support from President Burwell and Vice President Aw

Dear AU Military Community:

Thank you for your service to our country, and welcome to American University. We are pleased and honored that you have chosen AU to further your education. We think you will find that the rich resources of the nation's capital, coupled with the relationships you'll develop with AU's dedicated faculty and staff, and with engaged students and alumni, will offer you exceptional learning and career advancement opportunities.

The transition to university life can be challenging, particularly for students who have recently left the more structured experience of military service. We want you to know that AU offers a range of programs and resources to support you in your transition and help ensure that you thrive here, both academically and socially. A guide to these services is available through this Web site.

If you have questions about student life at AU or encounter problems you need assistance in addressing please contact Calvin Haney. Mr. Haney serves as the Division of Student Affairs' contact for veterans. An important contact for you on matters related to VA benefits and academic progress is Alicia Marsh, Associate director of Veterans Services.

The Division of Student Affairs hosts a Veterans Services Support Network. The Network's mission is to ensure that AU's departments and programs effectively assist you in navigating AU to complete your educational objective. Members of the network are selected because their offices serve as supports for students in our military community. The student leader of AU Vets is a member of the Network to represent your perspectives and communicate your suggestions.

We hope this information is useful to you in getting acquainted with the American University community. Best wishes for your success.

Sincerely,
Sylvia Burwell, President of American University
Fanta Aw, Vice President of Student Affairs
