The 2025 ILEA and LLM Administrators Conference, International Legal Education: Driving Change and Creating New Opportunities
2025
Each year, the International Legal Education Abroad and LL.M. Administrators Conference brings key practitioners together from across the United States and abroad to discuss common challenges and to develop best practices on some of the most pressing issues in the exciting and dynamic areas of J.D. international legal education abroad and LL.M. program administration.
This year, rather than hosting the conference over two consecutive days, we will be offering online workshops:
Workshop title: Linguists in Law School: Creating Legal Education That Empowers Multilingual Law Students
Date: Friday, April 25, 2025
Time: 1:00 PM EDT
Speakers: Heather Weger, Ph.D. (Applied Linguistics); Lecturer of Legal English at Georgetown Law and Julie B. Lake, Ph.D. (Applied Linguistics); Lecturer of Legal English at Georgetown Law
Description: This session unfolds in two parts. The speakers begin by examining key scholarship and engaging participants in identifying effective strategies for empowering multilingual law students. They then provide targeted guidance for two key stakeholder groups: law school professors and support staff. Participants will receive evidence-based practices for transforming hierarchical student-instructor relationships into collaborative partnerships, implementing interactive learning activities, and utilizing feedback models that develop independent, skilled legal professionals.
This session moves beyond theoretical frameworks to provide concrete strategies for creating inclusive learning environments across diverse law school contexts. By implementing these research-based approaches, our community can create more equitable and effective learning spaces for current and future generations of multilingual law students.
