Experiential Learning Opportunities

Studying Law in Washington, DC There is no place for law students quite like the nation’s capital. With government agencies, international organizations, top law firms, and numerous NGOs located within a short metro ride of American University Washington College of Law, opportunities to gain practical experience and to access DC’s greatest legal minds abound.

Student Life Our student groups, publications, and competition teams are a vital part of student life at AUWCL. From career connections to community service projects, guest speakers, and leadership opportunities, they enrich the social, cultural, and educational experiences of AUWCL students.

Our Campus For its 1,700 students, 430 faculty, and staff, the new and renovated buildings form a connected complex of teaching spaces, conference facilities, legal clinic resources, teaching courtrooms, law library, alumni center, faculty and staff offices, and multiple student study/meeting spaces. Outdoor spaces include a central quadrangle and an accessible front lawn that provide opportunities for interaction.

Office of Student Affairs The Office of Student Affairs works with students from Orientation through to Commencement, providing support for personal, academic, and professional issues that may arise, while coordinating programming and providing leadership and support.

Office of Career & Professional Development The Office of Career & Professional Development (OCPD) facilitates self-assessment guidance, career counseling, and resources, including recruitment programs and other events involving private and public sector employers, to help students and alumni succeed in their career and professional development opportunities.

Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Affinity Relations The Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Affinity Relations works with all segments of AUWCL, students, administration, faculty, and alumni, to address issues that are important to maximizing the participation of groups in our community who have been the object of historical and, or, statutory discrimination.

Student Organizations There are more than 50 student organizations and law school journals.

Office of Academic Excellence The Office of Academic Excellence provides students and alumni with resources such as workshops, individual advising, practice exams, study aids, and study plan and learning style assessments to develop and improve your academic skills and bar exam preparedness.

Study Abroad Programs

Our study abroad programs offer an exciting and diverse variety of cultural experiences, legal settings, and academic focus areas. In fact, about half of our students earn academic credit from a legal experience outside of the United States.
