AU's Newest LEED Gold Certified Building

The 125,000 square foot Hall of Science, earned LEED Gold and houses the biology, environmental science, chemistry and neuroscience departments. With the sciences being American University's fastest growing undergraduate concentration, the Hall of Science provides students with spaces designed around sustainable communities, and the needs of the academic population.

With space for lectures, events and conferences, the Hall of Science also provides students with collaborative workspaces and casual seating to study and enjoy, all in the site of a former parking lot. Within walking distance from multiple on-campus dormitories, and campus dining locations, the Hall of Science showcases sustainability and connectivity with the campus.

  • During the construction process, 87% of construction waste was diverted from the landfill.
  • Around 33% of the materials used in the construction of the Hall of Science, were locally sourced.
  • The glass facade of the building is not only sustainable, due to a high-performance coating that reduces solar energy entering the building by up to 75%, but also symbolic of the transparency American University welcomes into the sciences.
  • 95% off the wood used in the Hall of Science is Forestry Stewardship Council certified, meaning that the wood products are sustainably sourced and managed.
