Honor Societies

Alpha Epsilon Delta

Begun in 1926 at the University of Alabama, Alpha Epsilon Delta is the largest honor society serving pre-medical education, with over 144,000 members in 186 chapters throughout the country. AED functions as both an honor society and a service organization.

Alpha Kappa Delta

Alpha Kappa Delta is the International Sociology Honor Society. Founded in 1920 by sociologist Dr. Emory S. Bogardus of the University of Southern California in order to encourage scholarship and promote the scientific study of sociology. Nearly five hundred chapters have been initiated worldwide and more than 80,000 scholars have been initiated into the society. This society is open to all junior level students with a serious interest in sociology.

Iota Iota Iota

Iota, Iota, Iota (Triota) honor society was founded in 1992 to recognize the academic achievements of students in Women's Studies. The Gamma Beta Chapter at American University encourages and supports scholarship and excellence in Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) at American University. Membership is open to undergraduate or graduate students who have enrolled in a major, minor, or certificate in WGSS, or have a strong interest in WGSS, have reached third semester standing (minimum of 45 completed credit hours) with at least 9 hours of WGSS courses and a cumulative and departmental GPA of at least 3.0. Kappa Delta Pi

Kappa Delta Pi is the International Honor Society in Education. The society was founded by Dr. William Bagley in 1911 at the University of Illinois and was established to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching. Kappa Delta Pi represents all educators-regardless of subject area specialty, degree obtained, grade-level focus, or years of teaching experience.

Omicron Delta Epsilon

Omicron Delta Epsilon is the International Honors Society in Economics It was created in 1963 with the merger of two honor societies, Omicron Delta Gamma and Omicron Chi Epsilon; today it is one of the worlds largest academic honor societies. You do not need to be an economics major or minor to join. Undergraduates and graduate students are welcome. Eligible students will receive an invitation to join. Invitations are usually sent out in the middle of fall and spring semesters.

Phi Beta Kappa

The Phi Beta Kappa society is the oldest preeminent collegiate honor society for the liberal arts in the United States. Established in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, Phi Beta Kappa now comprises 270 chapters throughout the United States. Induction into Phi Beta Kappa represents a strong love of learning through diligence and academic merit.

Phi Sigma Tau

Phi Sigma Tau is an honors society devoted to philosophy. It was founded at Muhlenberg College in 1930, and subsequently incorporated as a nonprofit corporation of Washington, DC. Phi Sigma Tau is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. The Society's central purpose is to promote ties among philosophy departments in accredited institutions and among students interested in philosophy. Junior and senior philosophy majors who have completed at least four philosophy courses and have an overall 3.50 GPA are eligible for membership.

Psi Chi

Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in psychology; founded in 1929. Psi Chi functions as a federation of chapters located at over 1,090 senior colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, and Ireland. This society is open to graduate and undergraduate students who will maintain excellence in scholarship and advance the science of psychology.

Upsilon Pi Epsilon Association

The Upsilon Pi Epsilon Association was founded at Texas A&M University in 1967 for students and faculty who exhibit superior scholastic and professional achievement in the computing science curriculum. It remains the only National Honor Society for the computing sciences and is recognized as such by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and IEEE Computer Society. In 1997, Upsilon Pi Epsilon was admitted as a member of the Association of College Honor Societies - the parent organization for all academic honor societies in North America. American University was chartered in 1994 as the first UPE chapter of Washington, DC.
