Mission
The Center for AI Research in the Sciences and Humanities (CARSH) advances interdisciplinary research and education by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with scientific inquiry and humanistic insight. It brings together faculty and students across disciplines to collaborate on responsible, AI-driven discoveries that expand knowledge, promote ethical innovation, and generate meaningful public impact.

Announcement: Hedayat & Google Student AI Research AwardFor CAS Majors | Application Deadline July 30, 2026
Announcement The Center for AI Research in the Sciences and Humanities (CARSH) invites currently enrolled undergraduate students majoring in American University’s College of Arts & Sciences to apply for the Hedayat and Google Student AI Research Award.
Eligible students must be rising sophomores or juniors in Fall 2026. The award provides $2,000 to support AI-related research project conducted under the supervision of an AU faculty mentor. Faculty mentors and their projects are listed here: fall 2026 Cohort Research Projects for which students can apply!
Final award decisions and mentor–student matches will be based on project fit, student qualifications, and funding availability. Award recipients will be required to present their work at the Mathias Student Conference.
Students can submit their applications via the Research Award Application form up to the deadline date, July 30, 2026.

Faculty Affiliates
Faculty can join CARSH as affiliates to contribute to interdisciplinary research, collaborate on grants and publications, and mentor students.
Partnerships across CAS and Beyond
We collaborate with centers and departments across the College of Arts and Sciences, and welcome participation from faculty and learners across American University and beyond. CARSH also actively pursues partnerships with external organizations and research communities, including industry, federal agencies, and nonprofit partners, to support shared AI-driven research, education, and meaningful public impact.
Student Affiliates
Students are invited to participate through research opportunities, events, workshops, and collaborative projects. Student Affiliates gain exposure to AI research and connect with faculty and peers across disciplines.
Visiting Scholars
CARSH welcomes visiting scholars and practitioners whose work aligns with our mission. Visitors contribute to the Center’s intellectual community through research collaboration, talks, and seminars.
