University Space Heater Policy

As winter approaches, and with the recent switchover from cooling to heating at all of American University’s main and off-campus locations, we would like to remind everyone that there are strict limitations on the use of portable/local space heaters. While occupants at certain facilities may feel the need for additional heating, the placement and use of portable/local space heaters require the approval of Facilities Management staff. Only AU-provided devices are permitted. Personal space heaters are strictly prohibited at AU.

Portable space heaters present an increased fire and safety risk to campus facilities and personnel and often operate in a manner that conflicts with building energy management systems and carbon neutrality goals.

Facilities Management has established 70°F (+/-2°) as the standard winter temperature target in accordance with the AU Temperature Policy. Facilities Management makes every effort to maintain the targeted temperature throughout all main and off-campus locations. If residents, faculty, or staff experience room temperatures inconsistent with this policy, they or their department representatives should submit a repair ticket via Facilities 2Fix. Facilities Management will work to restore the targeted temperature as soon as possible.

Please refer to the University Space Heater Policy for more details or contact Vin Harkins.
