Health and Safety Signage

Dear AU Community,

Over the winter break, we completed our previously announced health and safety improvements. This includes a new website and signage system, and a finalized program for unannounced, regular inspections from an independent inspection firm, UL Everclean. The new website and signage will provide our community with comprehensive and accurate information about the health and safety of our campus eateries from these inspections, as well as inspection reports from the past two years to date from the D.C. Department of Health, and other national brand inspections.

The new website is paired with health and safety signage in our dining venues that will reflect the current performance rating from UL Everclean’s last inspection. Based on the rigor of the UL Everclean system, our goal is to maintain at least a four-star rating. Under the UL Everclean scoring system, a four-star rating is equivalent to getting between an A- and an A, and a five-star rating is equivalent to getting between an A and an A+ letter grade. For all reports that contain findings or improvement recommendations, we will post a management summary that provides more detailed information about the findings and our corrective actions. You can read more about the rating system, as well as review copies of previous reports and our corrective actions on the new website.

As we look ahead, we believe these actions, coupled with our work to overhaul the meal plan structure for fall 2023 and create a new retail hub in the Mary Graydon Center and Butler Pavilion will further transform our dining program and meet the needs of our community. We plan to share more information about the new concepts that will anchor the retail hub and the changes to our meal plan offerings in the coming weeks.

As always, we invite the AU community to contact us at mealplans@american.edu with questions or comments and you can find more information about our dining program online at dineoncampus.com/au.

Onward we go, together!
