Why One-Day Service Events?

Our One-Day Service Events program (ODSE) was designed to provide members of the AU community with a myriad of opportunities to connect with the diverse communities of Washington, DC. Although this program primarily focuses on the facilitation of short-term community service projects, we've made several enhancements that allow participants to experience deeper levels of community engagement during our sponsored ODSE events each year. Whether you're an AU student, alum, staff or faculty member, we hope you'll consider serving with us soon!

If your club, fraternity or sorority would like to organize a short term or ongoing service project, please contact our office at volunteer@american.edu.

Please reach out to Feruz Kidane, the Coordinator of Programs and Operations for the Center of Community Engagement and Service, for any questions about One Day Service Events at sarahre@american.edu.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE 2023

On January 16, 2023 - the MLK Day of Service - AU students learned, served and connected around the very principles that Martin Luther King Jr. lived by. Students started the day with breakfast and an activity led by Donald Curtis asking questions to think more deeply about the holiday.

One hundred students and 17 leaders were then sent off in their groups to serve in the DC area with six of our community partners; Kid Power DC, SAMU, Martha's Table, Horton's Kids and Alliance for Concerned Men. Huge thank you to our planning committee made of students and student orgs: Students for Service, Sister Sister, Black Student Union, and African Students' Organization.

Here are a couple of photos that highlight our time together!
