Pay Increases Effective July 1, 2023 July 20, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that effective July 1, 2023, the following compensation updates have been implemented as part of the university's ongoing commitment to investing in our valued staff and faculty:

Staff:

  • A 2.5 percent across-the-board increase has been applied to eligible full-time and part-time staff members.
  • The base salary for full-time staff previously earning less than $40,000 was raised to this new minimum salary.
  • A performance-based compensation pool of 1 percent has been made available to departments/schools/colleges for distribution based on performance-based reviews. This is not a 1 percent across-the-board increase. Rather, supervisors will allocate compensation increases based on individual performance and progress toward goals. The performance review period concluded on July 7, 2023, and the performance-based increases will be implemented effective August 19 for biweekly-paid staff and September 1 for monthly-paid staff.
  • Pay band ranges were increased by 3.5 percent, and staff members falling below the new zone one minimum were raised to the new minimums of their pay bands.
  • The D.C. minimum wage was increased to $17 per hour.

Faculty:

  • A 2.5 percent across-the-board increase has been implemented for eligible full-time faculty.
  • The salary floor for full-time term faculty without terminal degrees has been raised to $67,000, while those with terminal degrees will see a raise to $70,000. Additionally, term faculty earning less than $100,000 per year and having completed 5 years of service received a $1,500 increase. Those with over 5 years of service received a raise of $750.
  • Standard salary increases for tenure-line or term faculty promoted to associate or full professors have been raised by $2,000.

These investments in FY23 and FY24 are the initial steps of a multiyear effort to enhance AU's compensation approach. We are committed to supporting the individuals who contribute to making American University a great place to work and learn.

Best regards,
